If events aren't appearing on your map or locations are in the wrong place, it's likely a geocoding issue. Here's how to fix it.
What is Geocoding?
Geocoding is the process of converting addresses into map coordinates. Trips does this automatically, but sometimes it needs help.
Common Geocoding Problems
Event Not on Map
If an event isn't showing on the map:
- Check that the event has a location entered
- Verify the location name or address is correct
- Try editing the event and updating the address
- Add more specific location details (city, state, country)
Wrong Location on Map
If an event is in the wrong place:
- Edit the event and update the address
- Be more specific with the location (add city, state)
- Try using a landmark name instead of a street address
- Use the address autocomplete feature for accurate addresses
Vague Locations
If you entered a vague location (like just "Paris"):
- The geocoder might pick a default location (like city center)
- Add more specific details (neighborhood, street, landmark)
- Use the full address when possible
How to Fix Geocoding Issues
Be More Specific
The more specific your location, the better the geocoding:
- Good: "123 Main St, New York, NY 10001"
- Better: "Grand Central Terminal, New York, NY"
- Best: Use address autocomplete to select the exact address
Use Address Autocomplete
Trips's address autocomplete helps ensure accurate geocoding:
- Start typing an address
- Select from the suggestions
- This ensures the address format is correct
Edit and Re-geocode
To fix a geocoding issue:
- Open the event
- Click "Edit Event"
- Update the location or address
- Save the event
- The location will be re-geocoded automatically
Tips for Better Geocoding
- Include city names: Especially important for common street names
- Use landmarks: "JFK Airport" works better than just "JFK"
- Full addresses: Street number, street name, city, state, zip code
- Business names: For hotels and venues, the business name often works well
- Avoid abbreviations: "Street" is better than "St" for geocoding
When Geocoding Can't Find a Location
Sometimes geocoding fails because:
- The location doesn't exist or is misspelled
- The address is too vague
- The location is very new or obscure
- There are multiple locations with the same name
In these cases, try:
- Adding more context (city, state, country)
- Using a different name or landmark
- Searching for the location online to get the exact address
- Using coordinates if you know them (advanced)
